Starting 19 May 2023, passports are being issued under a convenient token system at the passport office in Battaramulla. This eliminates long queues and makes the process smoother.
From 1 June 2023, the Department of Immigration and Emigration will also launch an online passport issuance system — making travel easier than ever.

Why a Passport is Required
All Sri Lankan citizens who intend to travel abroad must have a valid Sri Lankan passport. The Government of Sri Lanka issues two types of passports:
- All Country Passport
- Middle East Only Passport

How much is a one-day passport?
One-day service charge: Rs. 15,000 (previously Rs. 10,000).
Service charge for children under 16 has also increased.
Average service: Rs. 3,500
Normal service delivery: 2–3 weeks (may take up to 2–3 months due to current delays).

Procedure to Apply for a Passport
Passport services are available not only at the Battaramulla Passport Office, but also in Vavuniya, Kandy, Kurunegala, and Matara. One-day service is available in all these locations.
How to Book an Appointment
- Visit the Sri Lankan Passport Online Booking portal.
- Select a convenient date.
- If you don’t have a Photo Acknowledgment Number, leave it blank (you may need to provide one depending on the system).
- Download the Auto-PDF confirmation or keep the SMS notification as proof.
